Although 87% of Los Angeles County mothers initiate breastfeeding, only 33% of their babies leave the hospital exclusively breastfeeding. Hospitals play a critical role in a mother’s success in establishing breastfeeding and in helping mothers continue to breastfeed after leaving the facility. Hospital policies can be used as a tool to get breastfeeding off to the best start. The focus of this initiative is to make sure evidence-based policies and practices are in place to support a mother’s choice to breastfeed.
This policy initiative brings together public health officials, hospital administrators, and breastfeeding and quality improvement experts to discuss meaningful ways to create systems change and improve in-hospital breastfeeding policies and practices.
