Position Title: Lactation Consultant Prenatal Educator (Full-Time, Hybrid)

Pay or shift range: $28 USD to $38 USD

Position Summary: The Lactation Consultant /Prenatal Health Educator (IBCLC) provides evidence base, culturally responsive lactation and infant feeding support to pregnant and postpartum families.  This role includes assessing feeding concerns, developing individualized care plans, offering hands on education and counseling support.  The Lactation Consultant collaborates with medical providers, CPSP staff, IBH and community partners to improve breastfeeding support and positive outcomes. The Lactation Consultant/Prenatal Educator is a member of the CPSP Enhanced Services team facilitating individual lactation support and group education to pregnancy care patients at Eisner Health.

Essential Duties:

  • Provides lactation assessment, management, and instruction to patients in the Postpartum Period.
  • Facilitates lactation classes for pregnancy, birth, postpartum and parenting patients.
  • Consults and collaborates with physicians, midwives and CPSP multidisciplinary team for complex needs in patient care.
  • Collaborates in development and implementation of new perinatal education, lactation program initiatives and grant implementation.
  • Maintains full documentation patient assessments and plan of care for lactation quality of care and CPSP compliance.
  • Participates actively in Birth Equity programs and grants to reduce gaps in breastfeeding and lactation equity.
  • Reviews education materials and collaborates in the development of educational tools to enhance patient education services.
  • Collaborates in internal and external referral coordination including: Mothers’ Milk Bank of California, Women Infants and Children Program (WIC), Doula Agencies, Maternal Mental Health Now, and the hospital network.
  • Fosters partnerships with community organizations to develop lactation support, education, and advocacy in line with Eisner Health’s mission.
  • Stays current with the latest research and development in lactation and parenting education.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish required.
  • Certified Lactation Educator (CLE), Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC, CLES).
  • Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required.
  • Doula certification is not required but preferred.
  • Bachelor degree in nursing, community health, public health, lactation or related field is preferred but not required.
  • Experience providing lactation education and direct patient care.

Compensation: $600-950 per visit – based on Assessor availability, per-diem role, non-regular employee, no benefits, traveling with reimbursement

Position Summary: The Assessor conducts assessments for birthing facilities being considered for Baby-Friendly Designation and/or Re-Designation. Per the assessment, the Assessor gathers specific information through interviews, review of materials and observations, then compiles a templated report based upon the current US Guidelines and Evaluation Criteria. Preferred method of assessment is in-person and BFUSA assessors are required to participate in in-person assessments and/or virtual assessment models.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Travel to birthing facilities located in various locations throughout the U.S. and its territories to conduct assessments as assigned
  • Conduct on-site and virtual facility assessments following the current established protocols, to evaluate whether the facility has met all the criteria for Baby-Friendly Designation.
  • Thoroughly and accurately gather data at facilities:
    • collect information on how well a facility is implementing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, as per current US GEC
    • conduct interviews with administrators, health care providers, staff and mothers
    • review facility materials
    • objectively document observations and facts
    • conduct investigative inquiries as necessary
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Ability to elicit information through active listening with multi-cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Complete all pre-assessment and post-assessment requirements, as per the current established protocols. This includes reviewing facility specific documents prior to assessment and submitting all administrative and financial documentation in a timely manner to BFUSA post assessment.
  • Maintain an up-to-date schedule of availability for conducting assessments (4-6 months in advance at a minimum) using the on-line mechanism established by BFUSA.
  • Be available for three (3) to four (4) days in a row to conduct on-site assessments on a monthly basis at minimum.
  • Comply with established assessment travel arrangements policy and procedures and have the ability to take initiative in order to efficiently and effectively manage travel complications.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the GEC for each of the “Ten Steps” and the International Code upon which the assessment is based by utilizing resources provided by BFUSA.
  • Participate in monthly assessor conference calls.
  • Work collaboratively with assigned co-Assessor to complete all aspects of the assessment.
  • Communicate with the Assessment Coordinator on a regular basis about any work-related issues that arise.
  • Work collaboratively with co-Assessor and Accreditation office staff.
  • Be compliant with prevalent health requirements for healthcare workers.
  • Must be flexible in terms of working hours and must communicate availability and need for leave of absence in timely manner; must be available for participation in corporate orientation and education.
  • Adhere to Baby-Friendly written information security policies (WISP), including HIPAA/PHI, HITECH, PII, other confidentiality policies, and protocols on reporting suspected breaches or disclosures.
  • Self-identify and report to BFUSA any potential conflicts of interest per BFUSA policy.
  • Follow facility specific policies and requirements as appropriate.
  • Respond in a timely manner to all BFUSA communication requests; check BFUSA email at least twice per week.
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion of all facility information and sensitive BFUSA information.
  • Support the mission and vision of BFUSA through positive engagements with facility and BFUSA personnel. Maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education / License / Experience / Technology Requirements:

  • Current RN licensure with at least five (5) years clinical experience in a hospital/birthing center maternity unit. Licensure must be maintained and kept current.
  • Successful completion of a 45-hour breastfeeding management course is required; IBCLC is a preferred certification and CLC is accepted.
  • Lactation certifications must be retained and/or evidence of 35 hours of CERPS within a 5-year period of time.
  • Proof of current valid and unrestricted U.S. driver’s license, clean driving record and a proof of auto insurance may be requested.
  • Immunizations up to date (proof may be required).
  • Drug test results may be required.
  • BFUSA may assign a laptop exclusive to BFUSA and assessment duties.
  • Regular access to personal cell phone with reliable service, ability to take photos/screen shots for travel documents, in accordance with BFUSA contracts and policies. Secure and private internet access.
  • Private space in home to conduct virtual interviews when assigned to a fully virtual or partially virtual assessment.

Physical Demands of the Job:

  • Must be physically capable of extensive travel to facilities located around U.S. territory (multiple time zones) for 3-4 days in a row, including overnights and weekends.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk for extended periods of time, climb stairs/ramps, sit in confined spaces, bend, stoop down, kneel, perform repetitive motions using hands to fingers, handle, reach with hands/arms and overhead; lift/carry/pull/push/move objects up to 30 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds; perform other physical activities as needed.
  • Ability to endure the stress of traveling (by various means of transportation, such as plane, car, bus, taxi, train, etc.), including time zone changes, agility to multitask.
  • Possess stamina and endurance with the capability to work long hours in a day.
  • Ability to drive a car.
  • Acute near/mid vision and hearing.
  • Ability to clearly and frequently communicate (speaking, reading and hearing).
  • Ability to observe, in real time and without slowing or otherwise interrupting the progress of all applicable types of ongoing health care treatment (e.g., including emergency treatment, and other extreme situations, etc.).

Work Environment:

  • Various conditions in many different settings, including healthcare facilities, hotel, travel modes, home office are expected
  • Exposure to difficult and extreme environmental conditions is common while traveling or onsite:
    • Dust, chemicals, poor ventilation, odors, allergens and infectious diseases, loud noises, vibrations, temperature changes, environmental hazards, and emergency situations, etc. are expected in related environments.

Position Title: Family Health Advocate/Group Facilitator

Reports To: BIH Coordinator and Lead Data Entry Manager

Hourly Rate: $29.08

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

Date: June 17, 2024

Position Summary:  Support the BIH Coordinator and Data Entry Manager in implementing the Black Infant Health program of BreastfeedLA in an effort to improve infant and maternal health outcomes for Black birthing people by promoting health knowledge and healthy behaviors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Responsible for the management, facilitation and organization of the group intervention with another group facilitator (each group session must have two trained facilitators conducting the session). 
  2. Coordinates and consults with other Group Facilitators/FHAs to ensure that group sessions goals are linked to case management goals and group session goals. 
  3. Attends CDPH/MCAH-sponsored BIH Basic Training, as well as subsequent BIH Advanced Trainings. 
  4. Maintains confidentiality and adheres to HIPAA regulations. 
  5. Develops a Professional Development Plan in conjunction with the BIH Coordinator and reflects basic skills of the HRSA MCH Bureau Leadership Competencies 1-8. 
  6. Responsible for providing social service case management to clients. 
  7. Maintains awareness and familiarity with local community and social services for client referrals. 
  8. Responsible for the development of a Life Plan that is on-going throughout the intervention. 
  9. Completes subsequent client assessments, Birth Outcome form, etc.. 
  10. Develops a Birth Plan. 
  11. Enters data related to  group sessions, case management, Life Planning, etc. in a timely and accurate manner. 
  12. Works under the supervision of the BIH Coordinator and Lead Data Entry Manager.

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university program in Social Work, Public Health, Nursing, Education, Health Education, or other health related or social science field. 

Computer Skills: 

Excellent computer skills, especially typing.

Experience with MS Office and G-suite, Constant Contact and Canva strongly preferred.

Ability to learn new data management systems, as needed.

Certificates and Licenses: Possesses a valid California driver’s license. 

Travel: This is an on-site position with occasional travel throughout Orange County and Los Angeles. Occasional travel on the day of events and meetings. Travel is primarily local during the business day. 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time non-exempt hourly position (40 hours/week). Days and hours of work are usually Monday through Friday between 9am and 6pm or 11am and 8pm. This position occasionally requires long hours during events and may require weekend work as job duties demand.
